Knox College

Knox College sits at the centre of the University of Toronto's St. George campus, and the chapel — Collegiate Gothic, completed in 1915 by the firm Chapman & McGiffin — was built in the architectural language that shapes Oxford and Cambridge. Inside it is quiet stonework, a long centre aisle, oak carvings, a rib-vaulted ceiling, and a wall of amber Norman slab glass made by Powell's of Whitefriars, which throws a soft honey-coloured light across the pews on a sunny afternoon. It is one of the most photographable ceremony spaces in the city, and it rewards a photographer who knows the room before the day. Orchid Photo has photographed multiple weddings here.

The venue at a glance

Knox College is at 59 St. George Street, Toronto, ON M5S 2E6, on the U of T St. George campus. The chapel seats up to 200 on the main floor and 50 in the balcony, and is rented through the college's own facility-rentals office rather than the university's central booking system. Weddings are typically scheduled on Saturdays.

Light and timing

The chapel's strongest interior light comes from the south-facing amber slab-glass wall, so natural light carries through most of the daytime and is warmest from late morning to mid-afternoon. For a Saturday ceremony, a 2:00–3:00 pm start lands the processional and the vows in honey-coloured light without harsh contrast, and still leaves an afternoon window for couple portraits before the move to a reception. Winter weddings are best moved 30 to 60 minutes earlier — Toronto loses chapel-quality light by 4 pm in December.

Portrait locations

Inside the chapel, the long centre aisle carries the processional and recessional frames, the side amber-glass bays give backlit close portraits, and the front of the chapel holds the vow exchange and the rings. The choir loft at the back offers a high vantage for the full-aisle wide frame when the officiant allows access before guests arrive. Outside, the front steps of Knox comfortably hold a large wedding party, and King's College Circle — the open lawn a five-minute walk south — adds green grass and U of T heritage architecture with far less foot traffic than Queen's Park.

Tea ceremony and Chinese weddings

Knox is a Christian chapel inside a theological college. It is the right room for the ceremony and the portrait session, but not for the tea ceremony itself. The Chinese-Canadian couples we work with run the tea ceremony at the family home or hotel in the morning, then move to Knox for the chapel ceremony and photographs in the afternoon.

A few things to plan around

Treating the chapel like a hotel ballroom flattens its signature look — the amber glass does the work, and over-lighting it with bounce flash loses the room. Flash during the ceremony is typically discouraged by officiants regardless of venue, and the chapel's natural light is generous enough to work without it. The aisle is long, so one clean processional and one clean recessional read better than a dozen staged frames. And note that Knox explicitly prohibits drones and atmospheric smoke on the premises.
