Yun and Keat gave their day one instruction, and it governed everything: white. White on the arch, white down the aisle, white on the cake, white on every guest who came to stand with them. A dress code is usually a small thing. Here it turned a garden into a single continuous room.
Graydon Hall gave them four settings without anyone leaving the property. The morning happened upstairs in the manor — a gown in a bay window, a groom at his cuff, a mirror old enough to have watched this before. The ceremony happened outdoors, at the end of the cedar allée, under a white floral arch with a violin and a cello playing the guests into their seats. Dinner happened out on the stone terrace under its canopy, with blossom hung low over the table. The dancing happened inside, under a chandelier.
The ceremony itself was short and unhurried. Her father walked her the length of the allée and held on a moment longer at the end of it. She read her vows from a card and had to stop once. They signed, they turned around, and a lawn full of people in white put their hands in the air at the same time.
Afterwards there was a circular arch of white flowers standing on the grass, and we spent the best part of an hour there — the veil catching wind, a hand at a cheek, the train laid out across cut lawn. Then a second dress, a ballroom, and the first dance under the chandelier that ends every version of this day.
