The day started at a family home, in rooms tall enough that the light came in above the furniture and kept going. Loraine dressed in a red embroidered gown. Gold bangles went on one at a time, pushed over her wrist by several hands at once. The dog came in to see what everyone was doing. Then tea, poured into painted cups and carried across the room to the people sitting by the window.
There is one frame from that morning we keep going back to: the embroidered hem of the red gown standing beside an open car door, and a pair of orange sneakers underneath it. A silver car had arrived, and she was still dressed for the first half of the day.
Casa Loma takes over from there. A white ballgown, a veil long enough to lay out down a garden path, and a castle willing to hand over its turrets, its fountain and a stone balcony. It is a venue big enough to flatten the two people standing in it. It did not.
The ceremony was indoors under the glass roof, at the end of an aisle lined in white flowers with a circular arch standing at the far end. Afterwards it moved into the panelled library — bookcases, a cake, round tables of white florals — and then back out under the dome, where the marble floor went blue and gold under the lights and stayed that way until the dancing finished.
Somewhere between the toasts a man in a tuxedo put a napkin to his eyes and left it there a while. That frame is in the album too. The castle is not the reason this day photographs well.
