Vicky & Stephan

A Graydon Hall garden wedding where everyone said “finally”

Everyone said “finally”

When we interview wedding guests and ask how they felt when they heard the news, the answer is usually some version of “so happy for them.” At Vicky and Stephan’s wedding one word kept coming back, in Mandarin and in English: finally. It came from family friends who had been asking “so when?” over dinner for years, from a friend who had known Vicky since the first day of middle school, and from aunties who admitted, laughing, that the couple had been happy to take their time — everyone else had been the impatient ones.

One of the moments that stayed with us came from Vicky’s father, standing in front of the manor’s old stone walls. Asked what had changed most since the two of them got together, he began with a joke, then told us about two trips home to Beijing. The first time, Stephan’s conversations with the family in Mandarin had been halting. By the second, they could talk easily. He didn’t explain any further. He didn’t need to.

Their first look was on Graydon Hall’s grand staircase, under the crystal chandelier, with afternoon light coming through the tall windows. Stephan, in an ivory dinner jacket and black bow tie, took Vicky’s hand on the landing; she stood one step above him, just high enough for him to look up. Later, in the manor’s wood-panelled bar, he stepped behind the green counter as though he had been hired for the evening, and she leaned on the bar and couldn’t stop laughing.

The ceremony was in the sunken garden, under an arch of blush pink, powder blue and ivory, with tall evergreens behind it and the reflecting pool in front. A string trio played as the guests sat down; two of the elders took the front row, one in a straw hat with a cane, one in a red dress and red fascinator. Vicky walked in on her father’s arm. Stephan read his vows from a folded sheet of paper. Vicky laughed through part of hers. When they kissed beneath the arch, the people who had waited longest cheered loudest.

In the evening the celebration moved into the ballroom, gold chandeliers above long tables in soft blue and ivory. Vicky and Stephan came in to a room on its feet, applauding — many of them the same people who had been asking “when?” for years. This time they were sitting at the wedding.
